加尔文的《基督教要义》作为影响人类历史的十部著作之一，是基督教经典中的经典。这部著作对于研究基督教的神学思想和西方现代文明的形成都具有重要的意义。
《基督教要义》在加尔文笔下历25年（1534－1559）始告完成。这书自1536年初版至最后由作者修正的修正版，篇幅扩充达五倍之多。内容最初以护教论说为主，以后各版修正则以训练为主，目的是教授纯正神学，使信徒能了解圣经。

约翰·加尔文(1509—1564)是基督新教历史上最为重要的人物之一。马丁·路德与天主教会决裂，开始宗教改革；而加尔文则以一部《基督教要义》建立了新教系统神学的典范。
德国历史学家兰克(Leopold von Ranke)说：“加尔文是美国真正的立基者。”法国历史学家论到加尔文宗信徒时说道：“这些人是英国真正的英雄。他们建立了苏格兰，他们也建立了美国。”这些都说明了加尔文深远的历史影响力。
